The Reach Official Baseball Guide was
published by
the A.J. Reach Co. from 1890 to 1927,
and A.J. Reach, Wright & Ditson, Inc.
from 1928 to 1933. In 1934 Spalding
bought out the Reach Company, and
published the guide under the American
Sports Publishing Company, a publishing
house founded by A.G. Spalding & Bros.
Spalding and Reach guides continued to
be published separately until 1939. In
1940 and 1941, the American Sports
Publishing Company published the
"Spalding-Reach Official Base Ball
Guide", after which it was replaced by
The Sporting News Baseball Guide.
The Reach Official Base Ball
Guide featured Rules of the game,
editorials from baseball writers on the
state of the game, statistics,
photographs, and analysis of the
previous season for all the Major
League teams, and many of the minor
leagues across the nation.
The guides
were also used to promote the Reach
line of sporting goods, which included
baseball equipment such as balls,
uniforms, Baseball gloves, and Bats,
making the guides very popular with
collectors today. The cover of the 1939
Reach Official Baseball Guide features
the Official Insignia of Baseball’s
Centennial, and illustrates a
gloveless, 19th century ball game.
