The Mickey's Team "Leave Your
Own Legacy" black & white Posters were
displayed in local hospitals to raise
awareness about the need for organ
donation. Thankful for the liver
transplant he received on June 8,
Mantle announced that he wanted to help
with the donor program. Mantle said all
he's "ever done is take." Shortly after
the Mickey Mantle foundation was
formed. Organ donor cards design to
resemble baseball trading cards were
distributed through organizations,
unions, and given out at all the
baseball stadiums in September.
These large 18"x22" Posters were also given out, outside Yankee Stadium on
July 22, 1995, Old Timers Day. Mickey
Mantle spoke to the Yankee Stadium
crowd via the Diamond vision, just
after Whitey Ford was announced, and
before Joe DiMaggio. Never a loss for
mordant humor, Mantle stated that he
looked like Phil Rizzuto in Babe Ruth's
uniform.
The poster
reads: Join Mickey's Team.
The Mickey Mantle Foundation, State
University of New York Health Science
Center at Brooklyn, and Brooklyn Union
Gas Company have teamed up to raise
awareness about the dire need for organ
donation in Brooklyn, throughout New
York City, and around the nation. Right
now, 42,224 people are waiting for
donors. More than one-third are Black
and Hispanic. Many who can be saved
must wait. For some, the wait costs
them their lives. The Health Science
Center at Brooklyn, a pioneer in
transplant care, is one of 15 national
Minority Organ and Tissue Transplant
Education Program (MOTTEP) sites and
the only site in New York State. Join
us on Mickey's Team. Be A Hero. Be A
Donor
