NOTES:

A special commission created by baseball executive Albert Spalding determined in 1908 that Abner Doubleday invented the game in 1839. One hundred Years after Doubleday designed the first diamond, baseball celebrated it's 100th birthday. On June 12, 1939 to commemorate baseball's centennial, the Cooperstown Baseball Hall Of Fame opened its doors to the public. This prestigious inaugural event was held at Doubleday field to honor the 26 Hall of Fame inductees including the 5 original 1936 members.

Ten of the 11 living members of the Hall of Fame then were presented. The only absentee was Ty Cobb, who became ill en route from California And did not arrive, with his family, until after the ceremonies. Four thousand people stood in the sun and cheered as Commissioner Kenesaw M. Landis formally dedicated the baseball museum and Hall of Fame as the opening feature of baseball's centennial celebration.

The front of the keychain token sold as a souvenir at the gift shop depicts the "National Baseball Hall Of Fame" and museum in Cooperstown N.Y. The back feature a dedication in quotes by Commissioner Landis that reads: "To All Pioneers Who Were The Moving Spirits Of The Game In Its Infancy And To The Players Who Have Been Elected To The Hall Of Fame...We Pay Just Tribute. But I Should Like To Dedicate This Museum To All America..." Kenesaw M. Landis, Commissioner Of Baseball 1939.
