NOTES:
Known in the hobby as "1912 S81
Silks" these tobacco premiums are
actually baseball players "designed on
satin," as it reads on the gift-slip.
The biggest difference between the two
is that silk is a natural fiber and
satin is a weave. Issued as a special premium
by Helmar Turkish Trophy cigarettes in
1912, the S81 satin collection was part
of the very same promotion as the L1
novelty leathers which shares the same
checklist on the gift-slip shown below.
As the presents listed on the gift-slip below, one baseball player, "design on
satin," could be obtained by mail in
exchange for 20 gift-slips, which were
packed one per package with Helmar
Turkish Trophy Cigarettes. For the
return of 50 gift-slips your received 3
satins, 80 gift-slips afforded you 5
baseball player satins. The offer was
good until June 1, 1914.
The design created by renowned artist
Hamilton King, for both the Silks and
Leathers, feature sketches of "25
celebrated baseball players." Twenty of
the 25 drawings are the same used for
the T3 Turkey Red series issued in
1911. Of the 25
baseball players listed, 16 were
inducted into the Baseball Hall of
Fame. The players last name and team
are below the illustration on the front
of the blank back satins, with the
order number at the top left.
Player and team is
listed by the order number that
appears on the gift-slip S
