During the 1961 season, both Mickey
Mantle, and Roger Maris were on pace to
challenge Babe Ruth's 1927
single-season home run record. The 1961
home run race sparked a marketing
frenzy that included products such as;
pennants, button, T-Shirts,
Sweatshirts, and this All Stars
Maris-Mantle Cap of Champions. The
child's baseball cap was offered for
sale in 5 & 10 discount stores such as
Woolworth, or John's Bargain store, and had a retail
price of about, .50¢ to a $1.00.
A 2.25" x 3.5" red, white & blue embroidered patch
affixed to the front of the cap
displays a Navy blue infield with red
crossed bats, and Maris' number 9 to
the left, Mantle's number 7 to the
right. The left side of the patch has a
blue stitched Roger Maris figure
overlapped by his name "MARIS" in red
stitch. The right side of the patch has
a blue stitched Mickey Mantle figure
overlapped by his name "MANTLE" in red
stitch. Above the infield in red stitch
reads "ALL STARS" and the Bottom reads
"CAP OF CHAMPIONS"
