Founded by John Zaso, Historic
Limited Editions
produced Silk-Cacheted Philatelic Covers
to commemorate a special event. The
process starts
with a staff artist who does an
original painting of a ballplayer or
event. The artwork is then reproduced
on a specially manufactured silk-like
cloth. The silk cachets are then
applied to envelopes which have been
stamped and postmarked by the post
office in the corresponding city where
the event occurred. In general 200-600
covers were produced for each, with the numbers
varying based on potential player or
event demand.
Historic Limited Editions occasionally offered pre-signed Cachets on
some issues. The Silk Cachets were also
used by collectors to have a
ballplayer autograph at memorabilia
shows. Z-Silk Covers were also produced
for players appearing at
autograph signings. The sample above
was made for the 1984 Cracker Jack
Baseball Classic. The Cachet Reads:
"The Stars were shinning bright on this rainy night as over 50 of the
games greatest players gathered for the
3ed Annual Cracker Jack Old Timers
Baseball Classic. The Washington Crowd
of 29,698 saw Home Runs hit by Hank
Aaron, Johnny Bench, Harmon Killebrew,
Andy Etchebarren, Tom Haller, and Billy
Williams as the National League rolled
to a 9-4 win and took a 2-1 edge in the
classic series. MVP honors went to Tom
Haller whose three run homer in the 3rd
inning was the crowning blow."
The first annual Cracker Jack Old-timers Baseball Classic, game was played
on July 19, 1982, at R.F.K. Memorial
Stadium in Washington D.C. The event
sponsored by Cracker Jack Inc., took
place every July from 1982 to 1987 at
RFK Stadium. The game was played at
Pilot Field in Buffalo from 1988 to
1990. Cracker Jack dropped their
sponsorship following the 1985 event,
after which it became the National
Old-Timers Baseball Classic.
